'Woody' faced Torres for a 20-minute spell when the striker came on for Spain in the second half of a friendly against England back in February, 2007. It was the defender's last England appearance and he played against Torres for 20 minutes before being substituted himself.
Five months later and Torres made his big-money move from Atletico Madrid to Anfield and he's responded with 32 goals in all competitions in his first season in England.
The pair now meet again in the season's finale at the Lane on Sunday and Woody said: "He’s an exceptional player, he’s scored 32 goals and that’s incredible for a first season.
"He’s got everything you want in a centre forward. He’s good in the air, quick, scores goals - a top player.
"He’s showed in this league that he’s a natural goalscorer whereas in La Liga he didn’t score as many goals. There was a lot of pressure on him because he was a local hero at Atletico Madrid but he’s come to Liverpool and there is pressure off him because they’ve the likes of Gerrard and he's done superbly."
Jonathan Woodgate had a close look at Liverpool hitman Fernando Torres last year and insisted: "He's exceptional."
