Name: Peter Standring
Lives: Washington DC USA
As a kid, we were able to watch English football matches on television. With the likes of Hoddle, Ardiles, and Villa, I immediately took to Spurs. On a business trip to London, my father bought me a Tottenham replica top (powder blue for some reason!) which I loved, but I was determined to own the traditional home white jersey, so the next time he crossed ‘the pond’, he brought a white one back, which I lived/played in until I outgrew it! I was a passionate Spurs supporter back then, I remain so today.
In October of 1999, I was at the Lane to see the match against Leicester. (Unfortunately, we gave up a late goal and lost 3-2) Sitting down close to the pitch was fantastic, but I loved being surrounded by fellow-Spurs supporters all afternoon: in the Underground, on the streets, in the pubs, and in the stands. Sadly, I have been surrounded over the years by Everton, Leeds, and (God forbid) Arsenal supporters in this country, and have often been the only bloke in Spurs’ colours.
I log on to the official club site every day, and also check out the BBC’s on-line sports page. There’s also an interesting supporter’s web site called ‘the Legend’, which I check out now and then. Fortunately, FOX Sports carries EPL matches in the US, and occasionally show Tottenham, but even if we aren’t the featured match, there are always highlights.
Favourite current player?
Carr. He plays every match as though his life depended on it. Remains focused, tackles hard, provides offensive spark - he’s young and hungry and wants to win.
What about three? Hoddle, Waddle, and Ginola.
