Jermain Defoe insists the team has the ‘winning mentality’ that is key to success in the Premier League.
We have won seven and drawn one of our last eight matches in the league, a run that has seen us climb up to fifth in the table, level on points with Chelsea but with a game in hand.
The nature of our victory last time out at Fulham - when we were put under all sorts of pressure in the second half but ran out 3-1 winners – underlines Jermain’s point.
“I’ve always said it’s important to have the winning mentality,” said Jermain, who scored the match-clinching goal in injury time at Craven Cottage, his sixth of the campaign.
“If you have that it doesn’t matter who you are playing against. You go into every game thinking ‘we’re going to win this’ and that’s important. We’ve got that now.
“We’re on an amazing run and we need to keep it going.”
Villa will provide a stern examination of our form.
Alex McLeish’s men are currently eighth in the table having lost just two of 11 games and only conceded 15 goals.
“Yes, it’s a difficult game,” added JD. “I always enjoy games against Villa. They are a tough team to beat, hard to play against.
“I’m looking forward to it and I believe it’s a game we can look to win, at home and the way we’re playing.
“Fulham was massive for us, getting the three points there. That’s a really hard place to go and get something. I’m confident about Monday’s game.”
