Michael Carrick v
Ledley King

Two midfielders who have burst on to the Premiership scene this season come face-to-face with each other in Wednesday night's London derby between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur at Upton Park.

Both Michael Carrick and Ledley King have acquitted themselves well in their first full season of Premiership football and have received many plaudits for a series of impressive displays.

Carrick, along with the rest of his team-mates should receive a rapturous welcome from the Hammers supporters after he played an integral part in the incredible FA Cup win at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Supporting Joe Cole and Frank Lampard in the midfield area, Carrick helped the Hammers to match Manchester United's engine room with both Roy Keane and Nicky Butt given a torrid time in the centre of the park.

Carrick made 34 successful passes on Sunday and his quality distribution has set up two strikes for the Hammers this term - in contrast Wednesday night's opponent, King is yet to claim a single goal assist this term.

King started his career as a defender and usually represents the England U21 team in a centre-back role, but George Graham has preferred to utilize the versatile 20-year-old in a midfield position.

The Tottenham midfielder made Premiership history earlier this season when he scored the quickest-ever goal after just 10 seconds into the game at Bradford. And Spurs BET are offering 25/1 on King doubling his career tally with the first goal at Upton Park on Wednesday night.

While goalscoring may not be King's forte he is an excellent tackler, winning 74% of his challenges this term, and his exquisite timing has only seen him concede five fouls since he broke into the team 11 games ago.

Meanwhile Carrick works especially hard for the team, and the teenager has attempted 99 tackles this season - only Olivier Dacourt has made more challenges in the Premiership.

With two precocious talents in Carrick and King, the future of English football looks bright as their performances this season suggest. Carrick in particular has established himself as a genuine contender for the PFA Young Player of the Year award for his consistent all-action displays in Harry Redknapp's highly talented team.
