'We lack cutting edge'

Posted on 28 December 2000 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

George Graham pinpointed a lack of cutting edge after another away-day disappointment at Southampton on Wednesday night.
As usual we enjoyed plenty of possession, especially in the first half, but more often than not periods of passing lacked an end result.
Two goals in 90 seconds in the first half won it for Saints with James Beattie and Kevin Davies both finishing well. The home side also created the better chances after the break as boss George withdrew Sergei Rebrov for Gary Doherty on the hour to shake things up in attack.
That made the Ukrainian centre of attention in the post-match press conference. George admitted: “Sergei has lost a bit of confidence at the moment and resting players happens at all clubs. Players need to be rested and I thought we looked a bit better when the boy Doherty came on.”
George was still fairly upbeat though. “I thought we played well in the first half until they scored the two goals in a minute. It was very even but they played the long ball better than us. It was a good tactic for them and the centre forward (Beattie) played well.
“We had lots and lots of possession but we’ve got to take the quality of our play into the final third and be a lot better in attacking areas.
“It typified our away form. We had lots of possession, came out and played good football but we need a cutting edge.”
Listen to George's post-match press conference in full by clicking here
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
