Heurelho Gomes is our last man standing at the World Cup.

Heurelho Gomes is our last man standing at the World Cup.

Sebastien Bassong and Benoit Assou-Ekotto bowed out after Cameroon's final group match on Thursday, Wilson Palacios followed with Honduras on Friday.

Sunday saw the end of England's campaign at the hands of Germany so Jermain Defoe, our only participant in that match, Peter Crouch, Aaron Lennon, Ledley King and Michael Dawson all packed their bags.

Giovani dos Santos joined the list of departures when Mexico lost 3-1 to Argentina in the last 16 on Sunday night.

On loan at Galatasaray in the second half of last season, Gio had an impressive World Cup but could do little as Argentina progressed with a double from Carlos Tevez and one from Gonzalo Higuain.

So from having 10 players in South Africa, we now have one with Gomes and Brazil.

The goalkeeper is expected to take his place on the bench again when Brazil take on Chile in the last 16 in Johannesburg tonight.

In today's other last 16 match, Holland take on Slovakia at 3pm in Durban.

The last 16 concludes tomorrow with Japan against Paraguay (3pm) and Spain against Portugal (7.30pm).
