Ian Walker is confident England are in safe hands with Paul Robinson at this summer's World Cup.

Robbo took his place in the side as England kicked-off the tournament with a 1-0 win against Paraguay on Saturday.

‘Walks’, who was back at the Lane with Bolton for our final home game of last season in April, made over 300 appearances in all competitions for us between 1989-2001.

He was also capped four times by England but just missed out on World Cup squads in both 1998 and 2002, although he was part of squads for the European Championships of 1996 and 2004.

He has seen Robbo’s rise through the goalkeeping ranks and has no doubts he’s worthy of the number one jersey.

“I think he's improved all round from what I've seen, he's progressed to England's number one and he deserves to be there,†said the 34-year-old. “And he can keep improving.

“Everything about his game is very good and he's one of the reasons why Spurs have pushed on again.

“He makes great saves, his distribution is superb - probably the best in the country.

“He's not a guy who gets flustered by too much. He must be looking forward to it and I'm sure he'll have a big World Cup.â€Â
