Jamie Redknapp underlined how important it was for us to go out with a bang in our final home match of the season on Saturday.
Jermain Defoe provided that bang with a thunderous finish for what proved the only goal of an entertaining clash against Blackburn Rovers.
"That win was vital for us," said skipper Jamie. "The fans have stuck with us and it's nice to give them something to shout about because it's been a tough season.
"I thought we played well. We got after them and played with more confidence than our form has shown. It was a good result and we needed it.
"It was an open game, full of chances, Jermain and Robbie were very lively up front and you always have a chance with those two.
"Jermain's goal was a tremendous strike and the keeper barely had time to move.
"It was hard because when you have those two up front you have to play more to feet and it's sometimes difficult for Tony and Ledley to clip those ball into them. You have to keep the balls below head height otherwise the likes of Craig Short will just gobble them up.
"Fair play, I thought we did well really well. It was a great day."
