Pascal Chimbonda isn’t underestimating the importance of our win at Middlesbrough. All our rivals for the UEFA Cup spots in the Premiership gained points at the weekend apart from Everton, who were 2-0 up before losing to Manchester United. Portsmouth toppled Liverpool, Bolton grabbed a point at Chelsea and Reading then beat Newcastle on Monday.

Anything less than a win would have left us slightly off the pace but as it stands, if we win our game in hand, we’ll jump up to sixth.

“It was very important,” said Pascal of the 3-2 win on Teeside. “If we’d have lost there it would have been a big blow but we played well and won, a vital win for the team.

“At 2-0 I thought we would score more goals but Middlesbrough are a good team and made it difficult. Paul Robinson made a great save to stop it being 2-2 but they still came back again after we made it 3-1, I couldn’t believe it!

“The most important thing is the result, so it doesn’t matter if it’s 3-2 or 4-3 or 5-4. We score a lot of goals and if we win, that’s all that matters at the moment.

“If we win every game, I believe we’ll finish fifth or sixth. But we need to concentrate for the rest of the season.”
