Colin Calderwood's starting line-up included seven Under-19 players - two more came off the bench to make it nine used in total - but the side was never bossed by the home side despite the likes of John Robinson and Chris Bart-Williams snapping away in midfield.
Indeed, we created more chances on the night, Ben Roberts was the busier of the two goalkeepers and more composure on front of goal might well have reaped its rewards.
Instead, Bart-Williams showed how it should be done with Charlton's best chance after just five minutes, keeping his head to drive home low after Shaun Bartlett's knock down.
Nicky Wettner snatched at our best chance of the half, slashing a volley wide from Dean Marney's deep cross while both Marney and the lively Mark Yeates were inches away with efforts from the edge of the box.
At the other end, Neil Sullivan's fingers were stung by Robinson's shot and Mathias Svensson's flick from Bart-Williams' corner flashed dangerously across goal.
The second half of an open, entertaining game also started with Spurs intent as Jamie Slabber had his first sight of goal blocked by the advancing Roberts.
Colin Calderwood switched things around from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 on the hour, moving Marney into central midfield and it almost paid dividends straight away as Lee Barnett's 20-yarder was tipped around the post at full stretch by Roberts.
Barnett chipped over from Yeates' clever pass but Charlton, always a threat with the likes of Svensson, Bartlett and Bart-Williams around, should have doubled their lead after 70 minutes when Bartlett could only head straight at Sullivan from Deane's fine cross.
Slabber, who had a running battle with El-Khalej, created the next opening but Yeates rushed his shot from just inside the box and Slabber blasted a half-chance over with 10 minutes left.
Svensson couldn't find a finish under pressure from the excellent Alton Thelwell and the final effort came from Bartlett that Sullivan made look easy from a tight angle.
Charlton: Roberts, McCafferty, Robson, Hughes (Debolla, 45), Turner, El-Khalej, Blomqvist (Deane, 63), Robinson, Bartlett, Svensson, Bart-Williams. Unused subs: Sharland, Elliot, Cerroni.
Spurs: Sullivan, Marney, Henry (Foster, 52), Bowditch, Thelwell, Perry, Yeates, Barnett (Price, 68), Slabber, Ricketts (Malcolm, 81), Wettner. Unused subs: Burch, Perry.
A narrow 1-0 defeat but plenty of plus-points for our young reserves against an experienced Charlton line-up at the Valley on Tuesday night.
