United vs Spurs - back in time

Posted on 7 August 2015  - 20:00

A new, occasional series for the 2015-16 season where we'll take a trip down memory lane as part of our pre-match coverage. First up, a goalscoring feat at Old Trafford 43 years ago...

BACK IN TIME - OCTOBER 28, 1972 - PETERS HITS FOUR AT OLD TRAFFORD

We've played Manchester United 182 times since our first meeting against the original Newton Heath in the FA Cup back in 1899.

Only four players have hit hat-tricks against United in all that time - Charlie Handley (1923), Bobby Smith (1957), Jimmy Greaves (1962) and Martin Peters (1972) - and only one has scored four.

That honour goes to legendary former midfielder and World Cup winner Peters, who scored all four goals in our 4-1 win in the old First Division back in October, 1972.

We'd gone nine years and 11 matches in all competitions without winning at Old Trafford until that day - and we followed up with back to back wins thanks to a Ralph Coates goal in March, 1974.
