Our last five encounters with the Black Cats at this level have all ended in defeat, four of which by the odd goal, and Under-21s Coach Ugo says the players are mindful of that as they look to respond to the disappointment of last week’s 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough.
“It’s a huge game for us,” he said. “Every time we’ve played Sunderland it’s been tight, usually with the game decided by the odd goal. Recently they’ve got it three times so we’re due a result against them and that’s one of the things we’ve discussed with the boys.
“Obviously we’re back at White Hart Lane, too, and the lads appreciate playing there. It’s part of their education because they’ve got to be able to deal with being at the Lane – there is an expectation, people are going to be watching, so it’s a challenge but they’ve got to embrace that.
“A lot of it has to come from within – the players know the levels that are required are much higher than what we reached last week. On the whole they’re a hard-working group but they’ve just got to realise some of the requirements and look to manage the game correctly. That’s a work in progress.”
