Spurs 4-0 Borussia Dortmund (U19 UYL)

Our Academy side scored four goals without reply to kick off this season's UEFA Youth League campaign with a statement win against Borussia Dortmund Under-19s on Wednesday afternoon.

We were superb in the first period, dominating the midfield for large spells and causing all manner of problems for the German side with our aggressiveness in attack.

It took only four minutes to get off the mark as Marcus Edwards danced into the area and won a penalty which he duly converted, before a fine solo goal from Keanan Bennetts and Kazaiah Sterling's predatory finish following Japhet Tanganga's header put us out of sight with just over half-an-hour played at Hotspur Way.

Edwards rounded off a 4-0 triumph in the second half with a run from deep and low shot, which crept beyond the fingertips of Dortmund goalkeeper Eike Bansen.

We got off to a bright start and took the lead after only four minutes. Edwards darted down the right and surged into the area, his run was too hot for Julian Schwermann to handle and the Dortmund skipper tripped him, Edwards dusting himself down to score the resulting penalty.

Tanganga was proving a key figure at the back, taking responsibility for keeping Dortmund at arm's length. Gabriel Kyeremateng did manage a turn and shot which went just over, but we looked more likely to score with Sterling outmuscling Soren Lippert to go through down the left side, only for Bansen to get back and smother at his near post after the striker ran wide. However, our second goal duly arrived on the half-hour mark as Bennetts burst forward from deep, exchanged passes with Dylan Duncan and evaded a tackle as he continued his run into the box before firing high past Bansen.

With the wind at our backs in the first half, two quickly became three as Edwards looped in a corner, Tanganga leapt to produce one of his trademark flying headers and Sterling got in front of the keeper to help it into the net.

The second half didn't quite have the same zest as the first period but we still remained largely in the driving seat. After Lippert stuck out a leg to divert Edwards' free-kick onto his own crossbar, we grabbed a fourth goal just beyond the hour mark when Edwards embarked on a weaving run from half-way, skipped over a challenge and beat Bansen low down to his left, his effort trickling into the corner of the net.

George Marsh got forward from the back to test Bansen with a glancing header from Edwards' cross, but Dortmund were starting to come into a game a bit more and after Marsh failed to clear his lines following Robin Kehr's foray down our left, the ball was teed up for Jano Baxmann to strike one from eight yards, but Brandon Austin somehow managed to turn it over the bar, keeping his clean sheet intact.

Coach Scott Parker said

"It was certainly a good result. I thought our play could have been a little bit better, we probably could have been a little bit more patient at times and really controlled the game but saying that, we can't moan – it was 4-0, I thought we showed a clinical side to our game and we did pretty well so it's pleasing in that respect. There's still room for improvement but we'll look to try to achieve that in the next few games.

"We caused them a few problems and it could have been five at half-time to be honest. That was pleasing but coming in at half-time, we said that the next goal was crucial and we needed to stay on it. I thought we started the second half a bit slowly but it was pleasing to get the goal and control the game after that."
