Boro U18s v Spurs - Kieran's preview

Posted on 8 April 2016  - 12:54

Kieran McKenna says our Under-18s are focused on producing a strong end to their season rather than exacting revenge on Middlesbrough for our FA Youth Cup exit when we return to Barclays Under-18 Premier League action on Teesside this weekend.

We travel to Boro’s Rockliffe Park training base for our third-from-last game of the domestic campaign, having not played in the league since the remarkable 7-3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on March 19.

We bowed out of this season’s FA Youth Cup at the hands of Middlesbrough back in January, but Under-18s Coach Kieran insists that result is far from the players’ minds as he continues to look for impressive showings from those in the squad.

“There hasn’t been much talk of revenge,” he said. “Middlesbrough were deserved winners on the night but you take each game as it comes. It will be a very different side that plays this game as it always is at youth level and Middlesbrough may have a different side too, we don’t know, so that won’t be a massive motivator, it will be more about the players realising that there are three games left with limited opportunities and this is another chance to go and play against a really good team and make an impression.

“Middlesbrough were a good side when we played them in the Youth Cup. They were very well organised, very resilient and I’m sure they’ll look to stop us playing the way we want to play and use their skills on the counter-attack as they’ve done to good effect this season, so we know it’s going to be a big test and the players are going to have to rise to the challenge.

“Last time out in the league we had a really exciting, attacking performance against Wolves but obviously it’s been a few weeks since then, we’ve had an international tournament and we had a really competitive in-house game last weekend so it’s important that the boys refocus now ahead of what’s sure to be a big test.”

Kick-off on Saturday is at 11am. Follow us on Twitter @SpursOfficial for live updates.
