The first stage of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League campaign concludes for us with a home match against Arsenal this weekend, with our youngsters looking to continue their recent good form before the teams from the league’s northern and southern sections are split into merit groups for the remainder of the season.
Always an exciting game at youth level, Under-18s Coach Kieran expects our latest encounter with the Gunners to be an attacking affair – much like the reverse fixture back in September, which Arsenal won 5-3 (highlights below on Spurs TV).
Once again looking for bright performances, Kieran has urged our boys to be diligent in their defending as well as intelligent when they go forward as they bid to emerge victorious from the 11am kick-off at the Training Centre.
“The players recognise the significance of the match – there’s always a big rivalry between the two clubs at any level so both teams will want to go and win the game,” he said.
“The boys will have played against quite a lot of Arsenal’s players across the different age groups and will know some of them pretty well and while we expect the motivation levels to be high for every game, they’re certain to be even more so this weekend.
“From our side, we will always look to go and attack on the pitch, be brave on the ball and go and impose ourselves. We did that in the last game against Arsenal but the disappointment was that we were too open whenever they attacked us and we didn’t defend well enough as a unit or individually.
“That’s something the boys have been doing better over the last few weeks so we’ll certainly look to go and attack again, but we’ll also want to maintain some of that improved resilience at the back.”
