John McDermott revealed that prior practise of taking penalties benefitted our Under-18s on Saturday as they recovered from going a goal down to storm back and claim victory against Manchester City.

The lads fell behind after just three minutes at Hotspur Way, but two penalties within a 13-minute period straight afterwards – scored by two different players – was the catalyst for the youngsters to go on and inflict a 4-1 defeat on the visitors, maintaining their 100 per cent start to the season.

Lively right-sided player Emmanuel Sonupe scored our first from 12 yards after being felled in the area – less than a minute after Charlie Oliver had headed City in front.

Nathan Oduwa then dusted himself down after being tripped in the box, successfully converting from the spot with 17 minutes on the watch.

“We do penalties all the time,” said Academy Manager John afterwards. “All the players take them, we’ve got a little practise that we do on a regular basis and they all feel comfortable with them so I was pleased with both on Saturday. The lads were confident and I thought they were both finished with aplomb.”

Reflecting on the early blow of conceding, John went on: “It was a disappointing start with probably two or three consecutive errors which was disappointing, but it stimulated the players to come back.

“Although it was disappointing to concede like that, I thought we showed good character to come back so quickly and to score a goal.

“I thought it was a good game. I thought Manchester City were a good team and it was a very open game, it was a tactical and technical game.”

After the lads turned the match on its head with the penalty double, Harry Winks made it 3-1 in the 28th minute, before substitute Daniel Akindayini rounded off the scoring 12 minutes from time.

“I’m pleased for the players,” added John. “I thought they were very good in the first half. I was a little bit disappointed for 20 minutes in the second half where I thought we got locked in a little bit.

“Overall I thought when we got the fourth goal that just changed the momentum a little bit. The fourth goal I thought was important just to knock the stuffing out of them.”
