Spurs v Chelsea U21s - Ugo's preview

Posted on 28 January 2016  - 11:16

Ugo Ehiogu has issued a rallying cry to our Under-21s players ahead of tonight’s Premier League International Cup quarter-final against Chelsea at Stevenage.

With the game coming just three days after our disappointing 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League, Under-21s Coach Ugo wants the players to “come out from within the shadows” and express themselves on the pitch as we take on the Blues for the second time this month.

“We have to show more belief,” he declared ahead of our fourth game in the tournament and the first in the knockout stages. “The boys need to go out and express a willingness to progress. That means doing whatever it takes – whether that’s an extra tackle or someone taking a gamble and getting into the box.

“We want to be competitive and stay in the game tonight because it could go to 120 minutes – it’s time these boys took a stand. We hope that some of them come out from within the shadows and show what they’ve shown to us in training.

“We’re the highest goalscorers in the league but we’re also at the wrong end of the table in terms of goals conceded so there’s definitely work that needs to be done but we’re still creating chances. A lot of the goals we’ve conceded have come from individual errors so you’d like to think we can rectify that.”

We lost 5-4 to Chelsea Under-21s in the league as recently as January 11 (Spurs TV highlights of that game below) and Ugo is keen to see an improved defensive display this time around.

“We need a bit more focus and concentration at the very least,” he added. “We never go out to concede five goals but we always want to try to create as many chances as we can so that side of it won’t change, but we’d like to be tighter defensively with more concentration.

“There is certainly stuff that the boys have the ability to change so it’s time the players stepped up.”

Tonight’s game takes place at Stevenage’s Lamex Stadium, kick-off 7.05pm. Tickets will be available on the turnstiles, priced at £5 for adults and £2 for concessions.
