Samuel Shashoua’s first half goal and a late Ryan Loft penalty accounted for our section of the scoreline, but despite a number of saves from goalkeeper Harry Voss we came up short against a tough Bees outfit who made us pay for our mistakes.
Our young starting XI was made up largely of first year scholars, with the more experienced Milos Veljkovic in central midfield and Development Squad players Emmanuel Sonupe and Anthony Georgiou on the flanks.
It was the Bees who took the lead five minutes in when Matt Stevens finished from a tight angle on the left but, after a good stop by Voss to deny the same player, we responded 10 minutes later.
Shashoua did well to win possession centrally, he fed the ball out to Georgiou on the left who, in turn, found the feet of centre-forward Aramide Oteh in the box. He then teed up Shashoua to find the top corner from 12 yards out.
Sonupe and Shashoua both went close, while Ryan Gondoh went through one-on-one with Voss after a long ball over the top of our defence but the keeper made himself big to block the Barnet man’s shot. Voss then had to dive to tip Joe Gater’s header around his left-hand post after a cross from the left wasn’t properly dealt with.
We made changes at the break, but the first part of the second period belonged largely to Barnet and it was they who regained the lead on 51 minutes when Fumnaya Shomotun nodded in from Gondoh’s left-sided cross.
The hosts made it 3-1 on 63 minutes when Shane Cojocarel scored from the penalty spot after Dylan Duncan’s tackle from behind on Gondoh, despite Voss diving the right way.
We started to find a bit of rhythm in the 15 minutes that followed without fashioning any clear chances but Stevens put the issue beyond doubt on 84 minutes when he finished off a counter-attack after we lost possession from our own corner.
Six minutes later, though, we had an opportunity to reduce the arrears when the hard-working Shashoua was fouled just inside the penalty box on the right and the referee pointed to the spot. Up stepped Loft to send the keeper the wrong way and complete the scoring.
