Under-18s set for Bellinzona tournament

Posted on 1 April 2015  - 09:52

Our Academy players will get the opportunity to test themselves against a host of European sides at the Bellinzona Under-18 Tournament in Switzerland this week.

A squad of 18 players has travelled to take part in the competition, with group stage matches scheduled to take place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We’ve been drawn in Group A, where we’ll face Spanish giants Atletico Madrid (Thursday), local side Team Ticino (Friday) and Russian outfit Lokomotiv Moscow (Saturday).

Under-18s Coach Kieran McKenna expects it to be a beneficial excursion for the players.

“This is a really prestigious tournament that we’re delighted to have been invited to,” he said.

“We’ve got Atletico Madrid in the first game and then we play a Swiss select side and Lokomotiv Moscow, so we’re going to come up against some top European opposition with different styles of play.

“There will be other challenges as well, in terms of having to play on consecutive days, with all the ingredients that we look for in a tournament to provide experience for the players.

“We’re going there with the majority of our Under-18s squad – they’re certainly a group that we’ve got a lot of faith in, so it’s going to be an excellent tournament.”
