Our Under-18s improved in the second half but were beaten 3-1 by Manchester United on Saturday.
United stormed into an early 2-0 lead in the Premier Academy League encounter at Spurs Lodge with goals after three and 11 minutes and then added a third midway through the first half.
The lads recovered, Harry Kane struck the woodwork and Kudus Oyenuga (pictured right) reduced the deficit early in the second half when he followed in Dean Parrett's shot at goal.
Coach Alex Inglethorpe reflected: "We all realise it's going to be atough start to the season but it will be even more so if we fail to do the basics right.
"The funny thing was that I didn't dislike us on the ball in the first half - we were just all at sea again defensively.
"We have to do better than we did with the first two goals and then we played for an offside flag that didn't come.
"I was pleased with the response in the second half but after scoring early, our play became a bit frantic. We needed to be more careful on the ball as we were in the first half. We could have done with a combination of the two."
