Our Under-18s were denied a point by a late goal at Villa in the Premier Academy League on Saturday.
The young team - this week starting with three Under-16 players - looked on for at least a draw when Callum Tapping (pictured) curled home an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining.
But Villa broke away in the final minute and capitalised on a defensive lapse to take maximum points.
"It was a real shame to lose it so late as I thought this was as well as we've played," reported coach Alex Inglethorpe.
"We went 1-0 down after 15 minutes to a disputed penalty, awarded for handball.
"At times, a young team needs something to go their way for confidence, but we had that to deal with early on and worked our way back into the game.
"It was a very good game of football and we created plenty of chances.
"We had the ideal chance to equalise when Jesse Waller Lassen, who had been a threat throughout, was brought down in the box. Unfortunately, Laste Dombaxe skied the penalty over the bar.
"We finally equalised after 75 minutes when a ball from a set-piece came out to Callum Tapping, who curled it back into the top corner from the edge of the box. I was delighted for him because he's worked hard on his game.
"Both teams had chances after that and I thought a draw was going to be a fair result.
"However, Villa broke down our right and took advantage of our one defensive slip all game to score the winner. It was a bitter pill to swallow.
"The lads are getting better and better every week and have played in the style we're looking for in the last two matches.
"If we carry on progressing, as I've said before, once we get the other side of Christmas I'm confident we'll start turning fortunes around."
