Kieran McKenna was disappointed that our Under-18s couldn’t kick on and win Saturday’s game at Reading after a strong first half performance.

We took to the field in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League for the final time this year amid a swirling wind at the Royals’ Hogwood Park training ground, with Marcus Edwards going close with our two best chances before half-time.

We had the wind at our backs in the second period but couldn’t find a way through in front of goal and the game ended goalless, leaving Under-18s Coach Kieran to rue what might have been.

“In the first half we were playing against an almost gale-force wind but I thought we managed that quite well,” he said. “We stayed pretty compact and got a couple of good chances on the counter-attack which we could have scored from, so at half-time we were pleased with the way it was going.

“In the second half the wind was in our favour but we’re disappointed that we didn’t use that to our advantage, capitalise on some of the chances that we had and create more opportunities for ourselves as well.

“Individually that’s something the boys have got to reflect on and with that in mind they’ll need to look to put some effective numbers on the board in the second part of the season in the New Year.”
