Reading U18s v Spurs - Kieran's preview

Posted on 4 December 2015  - 11:35

Kieran McKenna has urged our youngsters not to get too carried away with this week’s big win in the FA Youth Cup ahead of Saturday’s return to league action at Reading.

Wednesday’s 4-0 victory over Rotherham United saw us storm into the fourth round of the national knockout competition.

But as we travel to face the Royals this weekend in our final Barclays Under-18 Premier League outing before the usual winter break from domestic duties, Under-18s Coach Kieran has underlined how the boys must remain focused if they’re to get their rewards and finish off the current run of fixtures in style.

“Obviously we had the FA Youth Cup game on Wednesday night which was pleasing, but it’s really important for the boys to learn at their age that you’ve got to be able to play two games in a week at times and you’ve got to be able to back up a good performance with another one,” he said.

“At the level the boys want to get to, you can’t afford to be satisfied with yourself for too long, you need to look quickly at the next game and look to put on a good performance so that’s what we’re emphasising to the players.

“The home game against Reading earlier in the season (4-1 defeat) was very disappointing – there’s no two ways about it.

“Reading were a physically strong side, a slightly older side at this level, so our boys may be behind a bit in terms of age and physical development at the moment but that will be no excuse on Saturday. We expect them to impose themselves and the way we want to play on the game, match the strengths that Reading have and produce a good performance.”

Saturday’s match kicks-off at 12noon. We’ll have half- and full-time updates on Twitter @SpursOfficial in the build-up to our Premier League fixture at West Bromwich Albion.
