Kieran McKenna praised our Under-18s for maintaining their lead in the face of a period of Fulham pressure on Saturday.

Goals from Ryan Loft and Armani Daly put us in control at the Training Centre but, after Luca Della Torre pulled a goal back in the second period, the Cottagers went in search of an equaliser and it needed some good work from goalkeeper Tom Glover to keep our advantage intact.

Young midfielder Samuel Shashoua, making his Barclays Under-18 Premier League debut, then restored our two-goal cushion, before Loft completed a 4-1 win in the 90th minute.

For Kieran, our Under-18s Coach, the performance of the players following on from our midweek win at Nottingham Forest in the FA Youth Cup was a real positive.

“It was a pleasing display,” he said. “Around half the group were involved on Wednesday night at Forest and the other half came in fresh. We spoke last week about the importance of being able to back up good performances in the cup with more good showings in the league and I think we did that today.

“In the first half I thought we controlled the game well, played in our style and Ismail Azzaoui and Armani Daly were a real threat coming in from wide. Zenon Stylianides also gave us a real energy in midfield and at 2-0 up we were in control.

“An important lesson to learn from today is that if you don’t go on and get the third goal then 2-0 is always a dangerous scoreline and the game very nearly flipped on its head for 15 or 20 minutes in the second half.

“Thankfully we got through that period and managed to get the two goals at the end, so that’s something we can learn from.”
