Kieran McKenna said our Under-18s will learn lessons from Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea.

We kicked off the second phase of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League campaign with a high-scoring London derby at the Training Centre, the Blues running out 6-4 winners after a 17-minute hat-trick from substitute Tammy Abraham.

Four goals from Shayon Harrison had seen us take a 4-3 lead earlier in the contest, with Under-18s Coach Kieran left to reflect on what might have been.

“It was a really interesting game that had a lot of elements of a good game of youth football,” he said.

“You want to see good goals, good play and you want to see people taking responsibility but sometimes that comes with mistakes.

“At 4-3 up I thought we had all the momentum, all the play, but we’ve really got to learn to put the game to bed at that stage.

“In the end it was individual errors that proved costly for the goals so we’re disappointed with the end result.”

Kieran reserved praise for Harrison after his four-goal haul. “I was delighted for Shayon,” he added. “I thought he was excellent throughout in his hold-up play and his work rate and he came up with some really good finishes for the goals, especially the fourth one. It was an excellent day for him and hopefully he’ll build on that.”
