The showpiece event features six Under-18 teams, four from the UK including ourselves, competing in a two-day tournament with some of Europe’s top young players doing battle.
With the Group Stage of the tournament taking place today, we’ve been drawn in Group A alongside Real Madrid and Everton – the latter side having secured a narrow 1-0 win against us in last season’s Barclays Under-18 Premier League play-offs.
Group B consists of Liverpool, West Ham United and Benfica.
“It’ll be a fantastic opportunity for the boys to play some high quality games,” said Kieran McKenna, our Under-18s Coach.
“Obviously Real Madrid is a really interesting fixture and it goes without saying that it’s a game the boys are looking forward to.
“Then there’s Everton, who gave us two really high quality games last season so it’s certainly a day to look forward to.”
The tournament features 60-minute games, with teams playing each Group Stage opponent once. The first placed sides from Groups A and B will then meet in Saturday’s final.
Our Under-18s already have plenty of tournament experience under their belts – the latest being their impressive run to the semi-finals of the Eurofoot tournament in Belgium last month.
But Kieran believes the fact we’re the host Club for this competition makes it a slightly different proposition for the players.
“It’ll be different having it on our home turf – perhaps it brings a different type of pressure for the boys in that they’ll have senior staff and other coaches here watching,” he said.
“We give the boys fantastic tournament exposure right from the very youngest age group so this is not something that’s alien to them and they should be able to adapt to the tournament format well.
“Where we have two games in such a short space of time today, we really do need to hit the ground running.”
