Brighton U18s 1-0 Spurs - Kieran's verdict

Our Under-18s must work on ways to break through against well-manned defences after Saturday’s narrow loss at Brighton, according to Kieran McKenna.

We enjoyed the bulk of the possession without creating many clear-cut chances, but the Seagulls managed to keep our attackers at bay and took advantage of a swift counter-attack to claim a 1-0 win at their training ground in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League.

Kieran, our Under-18s Coach, admitted he and the players were left frustrated at the final outcome and said extra work is needed on making our possession and control of the game count.

“It was a really frustrating match – I thought we dominated the whole game in terms of chances, possession and territory but we struggled to break down a packed defence which happens sometimes in football,” he said.

“We didn’t show enough quality on the opportunities we did get and again, as also happens in the game, if you don’t take your chances it’s always possible that your opponents can grab a goal, which they ended up doing from our set piece.

“Really it came down to the quality in the final third and the need to break down a packed defence, so that’s something we’ve got to keep working on.”

One player who caught the eye in his attempts to find a way through was Jack Roles, with Kieran reserving praise for the young midfielder at the end of a second half that was somewhat subdued because of a nasty injury suffered by Brighton defender Tom Cadman.

“I was pleased for Jack Roles because that was his first start for the Under-18s in the league and his first 90 minutes for quite a while – his performance was good,” added Kieran.

“Obviously the game was disrupted a little bit just after half-time with the injury and we send our best wishes to the lad involved.

“For us, though, we got in a credible amount of good situations on the edge of their box but we really lacked the final pass or the quality of the shooting wasn’t on the level required, so there are a few things to take away from this game and work on.”
