Trust has its Sol say

Posted on 3 July 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust have released this statement following Sol Campbell’s move to Arsenal on Tuesday afternoon.

“Following Sol Campbell's move to Arsenal, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust believes that it is clear his previous protestations of love for Tottenham and respect for the fans were nothing more than the hollow words of a man too cowardly to tell the truth.

“The fact is, Campbell has consistently lied to Spurs fans. Had he come clean two years ago about his intentions, we would have understood and wished him well. Unfortunately, he lacked the decency and courage to be honest.

“Only one week ago, he went on Sky TV to cynically claim that his bond with Spurs fans would never be broken. Yet he must have known that joining Arsenal would be regarded by the vast majority of Spurs fans as the ultimate act of betrayal.

“There is nothing sadder than a fallen idol and we are sorry that Campbell has been found to have feet of clay. He did have a very special bond with Tottenham fans around the world. Through his actions alone that bond has now been utterly destroyed. We believe he will one day regret that he was not a part of the Tottenham revival that is now well under way.”

The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust is an independent organisation. It was formed in April 2001 under the auspices of Supporters' Direct, a government-backed body. The Trust is officially recognised by Tottenham Hotspur as the voice of Spurs fans.
