Our training camp in France took an apt twist with the ‘Le Tour’ in full swing as the squad and most of the staff enjoyed a couple of hours of pedal power.

There were three stages to this Tour – although no-one was racing – with a tough start, a more comfortable middle section and then a breezy descent to the finish.

Michael Dawson appeared to adapt best to the two wheels with an array of wheelies before the start taking him back to his youth.

“When I was younger I was always on a pushbike with my mates,†beamed the big defender. “I’ve not done anything like that in pre-season before and we all really enjoyed it.

“I’m sure it’s hard for the coaches in pre-season to keep things fresh but we do a lot of different things and this time they’ve brought in cycling, which was a brilliant laugh, but hard work as well, believe me!â€Â
