Darren Anderton v
Matthew Oakley

Darren Anderton will play a key role in Sunday's encounter when his home town club Southampton visit White Hart Lane in this televised clash. Up against Anderton in the middle of the park will be talented Saints schemer Matt Oakley.

The 24-year-old has yet to hit his best form for Stuart Gray's team this season but will try to raise his game to show old mentor Glenn Hoddle how he has developed since Hoddle quit last March. Oakley was the Saints' top passer last season and was the only player to make than a 1,000 successful balls.

However in the first two matches his distribution rate was a below-average 66%. In comparison, Anderton has emerged as one of Tottenham's most influential performers so far, attempting more passes than any other player and completing three-quarters of them.

With midfielder Gustavo Poyet suspended and Stephen Clemence ruled out until Christmas a lot will depend on Anderton being able to prompt Spurs' attacks through the middle.

But if he moves out to wide areas the former England international will hope to improve upon his crossing accuracy as he has only successful delivered one centre - it is little wonder as to why no Spurs striker has found the back of the net this season.

Nevertheless Southampton have yet to register this season, and with more off-target attempts than any other Saint this term, it is no wonder Oakley is priced at 20/1 to score the first goal of the game with

With only one strike in the last 18 months, Oakley may not be prolific in front of goal, but defensively he has won two-thirds of his challenges this season. Last term he won a club-high of 83 successful tackles.

Like the Aston Martin that he drives, Oakley possess a good engine but unlike the car's most famous advocate, James Bond, the Saints midfielder has sometimes lacked the flair of secret agent 007 and has yet to make a serious impression on the team this season.

And Anderton having just passed his recent MOT to play under Hoddle for the first time, will hope to give another polished performance to hand Spurs a welcome three points - and their first win of the season.
