Tony Parks joined coaches from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation as they teamed up with the Special Olympics in Beijing on Friday.
THF coaches Gareth Jones and Trevor Duberry worked alongside Special Olympic coaches and volunteers to deliver a unique coaching clinic for local athletes with learning difficulties.
The clinic involved 25 Special Olympians of mixed ability and was aimed at creating a fun-filled experience while at the same time, demonstrating the communication skills required to coach athletes with learning disabilities.
Tony, our first team goalkeeping coach, observed the start of the clinic before being introduced and after a team talk with the children, took his place between the sticks for a shooting session.
He said: "My overriding impression was just seeing how happy the kids were playing football out in the fresh air and how they enjoyed the fun and games with our coaches.
"It's a very humbling experience. We get up at home and moan about this, moan about that but every single one of these kids had a smile on their face, running around and kicking a football without a care in the world.
"What strikes you first is how our coaches communicated and engaged with these children. They are the experts.
"We're a big football club in a big community and the message from football reaches a lot of people. Football has a role to play and a responsibility in the community and you can see how good the club is at going out and doing that."
The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is involved with Special Olympics at local, national and international level through their commitment towards making sport inclusive, and providing the most appropriate player pathway for disabled people from grass roots to elite levels of sport.
The Foundation is supported by the Club to promote awareness of the Special Olympics movement, recruit new athletes and jointly fundraise to create innovative partnership work.
The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation is the Official Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia Grassroots Football Provider. This partnership focuses on delivering specialised coaching sessions across Europe and elsewhere around the world, such as the one in Beijing.
