Toby ready to stand up to old foe

Tuesday’s Audi Cup opener against Real Madrid presents Toby Alderweireld with an opportunity to get one over on one of his old rivals.

Our recently-signed centre-half knows all about the threats of the Spanish giants, having opposed them with former club Atletico in the Madrid derby back in 2013-14.

The most high-profile meeting of the sides during that season came in the Champions League Final, with Toby featuring off the bench in Atletico’s eventual extra time defeat.

Now very much focused on the start of a new campaign in our colours, Toby says he’s looking forward to locking horns with his old foe – and believes a positive showing will serve as an ideal boost to us heading into Saturday’s Premier League curtain-raiser at Manchester United.

“Real Madrid will be a very good test for us,” said the Belgian international ahead of Tuesday evening’s match in Munich.

“We have trained hard for a couple of days since coming back from Colorado and now we’re going to Germany.

“Real are one of the best teams in the world and they are very strong both at the back and up front.

“They can score from anything so we’ll have to be at our best to get a result against them, but I think we’re capable of winning.

“We have to try to get a good result to boost our confidence for the start of the season.”

Following our clash with Real, we take on either AC Milan or Bayern Munich on Wednesday night before the season opener at Old Trafford at the weekend.
