Toby keen to share praise with whole team

Toby Alderweireld insists our impressive defensive record this season hasn’t just been down to the efforts of the back four.

The Belgian international has been ever-present in the top flight so far in 2015-16, playing all 14 games alongside compatriot Jan Vertonghen at centre-half and Kyle Walker at right-back.

Only the left-back position has seen rotation come into play with Danny Rose sharing duties with Welsh international Ben Davies as we’ve maintained a tight ship – enjoying the second best defensive record in the Premier League with only 11 goals conceded.

Toby, named Man of the Match by supporters after Sunday’s draw with reigning champions Chelsea, believes that solid record has been down to the efforts of the whole team rather than just the designated defenders.

“I don’t want to take all the credit for us – the midfield is running like crazy in front of us as well,” he said.

“Everyone is working hard and that makes it easier.

“At the back we have quality, we’re showing we’re solid and that’s good, but when someone from the opposition does get through, Hugo is there to save us.”

Toby’s praise for goalkeeper Hugo Lloris came about after the French international’s latest heroics against the Blues last weekend, where he denied Eden Hazard from a tight angle to keep his clean sheet intact.

Toby felt that particular save was key to us taking a point against our London rivals.

“That’s his quality,” he added. “There are a lot of good goalkeepers in the Premier League but it’s more difficult to be able to make that save when it’s needed.

“It was a wonderful stop and it helped us. He’s playing wonderfully this season.”
