The midfielder grabbed 10 goals from midfield despite three months out last season but had yet to open his account before Saturday’s visit of Sunderland.
Sherwood admitted to the official Spurs website before the weekend that scoring goals were just a bonus as long as the team won.
Yet he still ran fully 60 yards in celebration after poking home the opening goal in the crucial 2-1 Premiership win at the Lane.
Sherwood revealed: “That was relief more than anything just to get us in front because I know how important that is when we play at home.
“It was pleasing to win and obviously an added bonus for me was to get on the scoresheet. But it’s all about us winning and we managed it.
We have to build from this now. We’ve got Villa next week and maybe we’ll get our first away victory.”
Sherwood, who asked for everyone to stick together pre-match, was full of praise for the fans. “To be fair to the crowd they stuck with us today even when Sunderland equalised,” he said.
“We have to give them credit. They didn’t get on our backs when they equalised and eventually we showed our colours and came through.”
