Think Fit, a Tottenham Hotspur Foundation programme aimed at engaging young women in disadvantaged communities into sport and physical activity, celebrated its first six months in an event held at White Hart Lane on Wednesday.
The event saw partners, participants and women from the local community come together for taster sessions of Zumba, Hockey, Tennis and Rounders, and discussions around health and physical activity.
Think Fit sessions are designed to help women get fit, look great and live well, providing the chance to meet new people and learn new skills as well as keeping fit and healthy.
Participants have access to attend training and coaching courses, health and well-being workshops and be involved with the co-ordination of the sessions themselves.
Sessions started in September, 2011, across Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest, with 200 women already taking part and a target of 1,008 participants over three years.
Participants’ ages range from 16 to 73 and there are currently 11 active sessions across the four Boroughs and more planned for the New Year.
Activities include casual multi–sports, fitness, jogging, badminton and basketball available to all women over 16 in either free or affordable sessions.
Hub sites for the programme include Broadwater Farm Community Centre in Haringey, Leyton Sixth Form College and Leyton Leisure Lagoon in Waltham Forest, Burnt Oak Leisure Centre in Barnet and TaB Centre Plus and Southbury Leisure Centre in Enfield.
The programme is primarily funded by Sport England’s Active Women funding round with partner funding from the London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest. Delivery partners include GLL, Fusion and various National Governing Bodies of Sport.
The programme is one of 20 projects funded nationally by Sport England- the only one run at a professional Football Club.
