Hotspur tells the story of Harry Evans, Bill Nicholson's assistant as we won the double in 1961.

The quiet man key to double success

As is so often the case, the man working behind the scenes can play a crucial role in making things happen at key times in the life of any football club.

With our own Bill Nicholson and our Double success of 1960-61 that man was undeniably Harry Evans and his important story is told in the current Hotspur magazine.

Harry balanced Bill’s more direct approach by going about things in his own quiet but hugely professional way. While Nicholson ran things on the training field, assistant manager Evans provided the back up to enable him to do what he did best.

Born in Lambeth, Harry had played for a number of clubs, including Southampton, Exeter City and Aldershot before making the move to Spurs in 1950.

Sadly, just a year after playing such a major role in our 1961 triumph, Harry died from cancer, at the age of just 43.

His is a story that deserves to be told and Spurs fans can read about a man who was an important part of our history and who was there every step of the way in the greatest season this club has ever known.

He was also John White’s father-in-law and clearly an important influence on the Scottish international whose own life was cut so tragically short.

As Tony Marchi recalls: “You had this big Spurs side yet nothing was ever mentioned about Harry, although he helped Bill Nicholson such a lot. He did the office work so Bill could do the coaching and training that was his love. He was a nice man to know.”

Adds Marchi’s fellow Double team mate, Terry Dyson: “Harry was perfect for Bill. Brilliant. They just had a rapport.”

Read the full story of how this quiet man had such an influence as we created history more than 50 years ago.
