The Perryman Years 5

Posted on 22 June 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

In the final part of our video series with Spurs legend Steve Perryman, Steve explains his decision to head east to revive his football career.

Steve Perryman described his spell in Japan as ‘going back to his football roots’.

After a spell in Norway Steve made ‘a hell of decision’ to join Ossie Ardiles in Japan’s J-League at Shimizu S-Pulse in 1995. “Ossie asked me if I wanted to join him in this new venture,” Steve recalled.

“I saw it as going back to my football roots. They might seem strange in such a new league but in Japan it’s all about a group of players and getting time to work with them. There was no answering the phone or day or tearing up and down motorways. It was all about football.

“It changed my outlook. You can improve players if you able to take time to work with them. It was back to what is important and gave me great job satisfaction.”

And the results followed.
