The complete striker

Posted on 25 April 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Dean Richards views Manchester United star Ruud van Nistelrooy as the most complete striker in the Premiership.

The big defender will be charged with stopping the flying Dutchman in Sunday's cracker at the Lane.

Van Nistelrooy has scored 39 goals in total this season - he's on a streak of scoring in nine successive matches, including back-to-back internatonals - and in the Premiership he's bagged 20 in 31 matches including the winning penalty in our clash at Old Trafford back in September.

"His finishing is first class and he's always got the knack of being in the right place at the right time," said Dean, hoping to overcome a back problem to face him on Sunday.

"He scores different sorts of goals. The goal he scored against Arsenal was superb, his turn of pace and to run with the ball at that speed and then to finish how he did took some ability.

"But the key thing is his movement. In a lot of ways he plays behind you and his timing of coming off to receive the ball and not getting offside from behind you is a bit of a nightmare for defenders because you like to see your man in front.

"He is very bright, very sharp. People always talk about his finising but it's his pace and movement that gets him in those positions in the first place.

"I think he's as complete a striker as there is in the Premier League."

Deano agrees with the general consensus that the best way to defend against United is to attack.

"We'll have to be switched on because they are an awesome team going forward," he added.

"But I think the best way to defend against Manchester United it go out and attack them.

"That's what we did here last season and, to some extent, at Old Trafford this season. I thought we contained them quite well up there, hit them on the break and only lost out to a penalty."
