David Pleat admitted that Monday was a day of reflection following the weekend defeat to Newcastle.
With the Carling Cup quarter-final against Middlesbrough on Wednesday drawing close, the acting manager reasoned that the setback at St James Park needed to be examined and recovery from that is a test of character for the players.
"It has been more reflection at this stage," said David. "Obviously we will now direct our minds towards Middlesbrough.
"There are all sorts of avenues to take with players because you don't really know what is inside their heads. Some will express themselves within the collective group and a lot of them do it individually.
"If you are going to have a good, solid team you need togetherness in all aspects. It is when you have had a whack and conceded four goals that you find out what people are made of."
