Teemu Tainio will take a positive memory into our first pre-season friendly against Bordeaux on Thursday.

The Finnish international midfielder spent eight seasons with Auxerre in Le Championnat and was happy to relive his last meeting with Bordeaux.

“We won 5-1 and I scored,†he beamed. “But I also had a few defeats against them.â€Â

With 150 appearances for Auxerre under his belt, Teemu is well placed to talk about our first pre-season opponents although he might not face them again as Martin Jol intends to use the full 26-man squad over the back-to-back friendlies against Bordeaux tonight and Nice on Friday night.

“Bordeaux were champions last in 1998 and they then had a bit of a low period but last season they came back again and finished second,†added Teemu.

“They will be playing Champions League football next season so it will be a good test for us.

“I think they will have started training before us so they will be further down the line than us, a bit fitter and that will make it tough. If it’s hot, it will be hard work but a valuable test for us.

“They like to keep the ball, to keep possession and we will have to keep the ball as well.â€Â

Here are our friendlies in France – all kick-off at 7pm local time (6pm UK)...
July 13 v Bordeaux in Stade Olympique d'Albertville, France.
July 14 v Nice at Stade Municipal d'Evian, France.
July 18 v Celta Vigo at Stade Municipal d'Annecy, France.
