Teemu Tainio is convinced Michael Carrick will shine if handed his chance in the World Cup.

The midfielder capped a fine season by being named in Sven Goran Eriksson’s 23-man squad for Germany.

It has been suggested following Wayne Rooney's foot injury that Michael - who performed so well in England’s last friendly against Uruguay in March - could line-up in a holding role in midfield if Eriksson opts to change formation and play just one up front, pushing Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard further forward.

Teemu played a number of times in midfield with Michael this season and formed an impressive central partnership with him in the latter stages of the campaign – their performance together in the 1-1 draw at Highbury was as good as it gets.

“Michael reminds me a lot of Pep Guardiola, who played for Barcelona for so many years,†said Teemu.

“He has a very similar style in that he’s excellent with his passing and very rarely loses the ball.

“He’s always available to receive a pass, keeps moves going and he’s very important in our midfield.

“I’m sure he can do something for England in the World Cup but a lot of that depends on the system they go with in Germany. If he gets his chance, I’m sure he’ll do well.â€Â
