This is the time when a big squad is needed as we enter the busy Christmas period, we’ve got some very important games coming up, starting today against West Brom.
It will be a difficult game against a very workmanlike side in which everyone plays for each other and that makes them a particularly tough team to play against.
Add that to the Arsenal game coming up, which everyone here loves to be involved in, and the busy run of games over the festive period and it’s easy to see why we all need to be pulling together right now.
With an almost full strength squad in a positive mood, hopefully we will enter the New Year and second half of the campaign in the frame near the top of the table, ready to make a big push for the remainder of the season.
Going back to the game against Leeds, it was very important that we won and we approached the match very well in the first half and got ourselves in front. From then on, it was quite a scrappy affair but we were happy with that by then.
A special mention for Robbie, who made the Goal of the Month competition with his outstanding piece of skill to score against his old club. Curling the ball into the top corner with the outside of your right foot is a very hard thing to do but he did it to perfection on that occasion. It’s something he does all the time in training and I’m sure there’s lots more to come from him.
Following the win over Leeds, we headed to Birmingham with a lot of confidence after that but we never really got into our style of play on the day.
It became a hard game but having said that we ground out a result when we were nowhere near our best. That shows, along with a few of our performances from the start of the season, that we are learning from last year and long may that continue.
In my last column I was talking about how good our squad is and can be. We had a very good performance against Leeds and a not so impressive one against Birmingham, but we took four points from six and before the two games we would have been happy with that.
