A heavily depleted squad, missing 13 senior players, gave a very good account of themselves at Old Trafford, defended stoutly and had chances to take something from the game. Only a penalty denied them reward.
"It's good," said John of the mood in the dressing room afterwards. "We're not despondent because we know we've done well. We had a go at the end as well, which was nice to see.
"Can't complain about the penalty because I think it was one, but we're just disappointed because I think the lads put in a great effort.
"Simon Davies and Ben Thatcher were outstanding.
"Simon was absolutely superb both on and off the ball - defensively and going forward. Robbie Keane showed some great skills and, to be fair, it was a solid performance with Jamie and Goran in midfield.
"It's disappointing to come here and lose but, it shows, with the amount of players we've got out, we are definitely going along the right lines.
"Hopefully when we get everybody back we'll do really well."
John Gorman says the mood of the players was not downbeat after the single goal defeat to Manchester United because they know they did themselves justice.
