‘Tano’ is likely to come face to face with fellow Argentinian Julio Arca down the right flank at the Stadium of Light.
The pair both came to England from Argentinos Juniors — Arca a £3.5million at the start of last season while Mauricio actually arrived at Ipswich Town back in September 1994.
Mauricio admits he doesn’t know Arca personally but he certainly knows all about him professionally.
“It looks like he might play down the left side, he might play down the other wide, we don’t know,” he said. “I don’t really know a lot about him personally.
“I know he played for the Under-21s, did great last year and he’s playing practically every game. It should be a good clash.”
Tano agreed that they are similar players — both brought up to play football the Argentinian way.
“We come from a club where that is what they teach you,” he explained. “Try to keep the ball on the ground, pass it when you have it and then do everything you can to get it back.
“I know he’s a great technical player and maybe not as quick as other wingers, but a very clever player.”
And he knows what to expect at Sunderland. “It will always be tough there,” he concluded. “You always get good crowds and they get behind their team.
“Nothing that we don’t know really but hopefully we can get a good result because we need a good result.
"We’ve played well. We have to keep playing football, play better and better and perhaps dominate games more. Results are important and that is what we need now.”
