As we prepare to face Aston Villa at the Lane on day one, both boss Glenn Hoddle and skipper Teddy Sheringham believe that reaching European competition is the key to progress.
Glenn declared: “I want to see a progression here. It’s been a little bit in the doldrums.
“I want to see a progression and a style of football out there that relates to our supporters and this club.
“But I want to be successful. That is becoming harder and harder with the five clubs that should be going for the title with the money they’ve spent.
“That makes it difficult for us but the ambition is to pinch one of those spots, eventually.
“I want to see a progression and eventually, if it’s after this season, great, see us back in Europe. If we get back in Europe we will be able to entice better, younger players out there.”
Teddy, unfortunately out of the opener with Achilles trouble, added: “The realistic and rightful view is to aim for Europe.
“We definitely have the quality to be aiming along those lines, we’ve already had a chat as a squad and we all believe we should be getting into Europe, through the league as well. We’re looking at that sort of consistency.”
We kick-off our new Premiership campaign today with one target — Europe.
