As the USA prepare to go head-to-head with co-hosts South Korea, David Pleat reflects on the shock of the tournament so far.
THE BIGGEST SHOCK so far was the USA's victory over Portugal - who could have dreamt of such a result.
Everything went in the USA's favour in that first half. The poor attempt at a save by Baia that fell at O'Brien's feet, the lucky deflection off Costa that put them 2-0 up and, thirdly, the fine header where Couto was caught in no man's land when McBride headed in.
We all sat an waited expecting a Portuguese backlash, but it was never really convincing. The own goal from Argoos will probably emerge as the OG of the tournament but, in the end, Friedel kept a sound goal and the USA celebrated.
It is a shame that the merit of the achievement probably wasn't recognised in their home country as much as it deserved.
Incredibly, the USA and Korea sit with three points. I think Korea have a great chance of the quarter-finals, stirred by the passion of the people.
Whether the USA has had its day of glory - one suspects they might have.
