Martin Jol reported that Teemu Tainio departed early from Monday night's clash against Portsmouth with a knee injury. The all-action midfielder was heavily involved again before picking up the knock in the first half.

He was replaced by the returning Wayne Routledge after 40 minutes and headed straight down the tunnel for treatment.

"It looks like a problem with his knee and we will have to make an assessment of the injury," said Head Coach Martin afterwards. Meanwhile, Martin explained his decision to substitute the substitute when he replaced Wayne with Andy Reid with 10 minutes left.

As it turned out, Andy made quite an impact with assists for our crucial second and third goals - he took the free-kick handled by Gary O'Neil to hand Mido the chance to make it 2-1 from the penalty spot before crossing for Jermain Defoe to seal it in the last minute.

"I just felt Andy could do something," added Martin. "Portsmouth had five big men so if I took Jermaine Jenas off, for example, he was one of our players marking and we might have had problems at set-pieces. He was also playing well.

"It was a bit harsh on Wayne, it was his first game back and he's looked well in training, so there is no problem. Sometimes you just have to make a decision and Wayne will get his chance again."
