Ramon Vega is determined to get back onto the international scene. The big defender first caught the eye in this country with his performances for Switzerland in Euro96. But it has been a lean time for both Vega and his country since - culminating in failure to make the European Championship finals this year.
Vega is finally looking back to his best after a nightmare run of injuries dating back to the Worthington Cup Final in March 1999 and has set his sights on helping Switzerland qualify for the World Cup.
Capped 21 times, Vega revealed: "It is a long time since I last played internationally, perhaps even before the Worthington Cup Final.
"Unfortunately it hasn't gone well for Switzerland and we didn't qualify for the European Championships. I didn't play in those games because of injury.
"I hope now to get back into that team. I've already had a phone call from the coach, I spoke to him and he wants me to be in the squad again, which is nice because after a year of injuries it is good for the national team to want you. I hope to play again and help us qualify for the World Cup."
But Vega knows he has just as an important task closer to home first. He added: "I am taking it one step at a time. The most important thing at the moment is Tottenham, to get in the squad, play, win things and then get into the national team and win again. This is a very important year for Spurs and I want to be part of it."
