Chris Hughton admits he's surprised to see West Brom struggling at the wrong end of the Premiership table.

Monday's visitors to the Lane are locked in a scrap for survival with ever-improving Portsmouth and Midlands rivals Birmingham City.

The Baggies are currently just above the drop zone but will point to being unlucky not to reap more reward from recent fixtures against Manchester United, Chelsea and Birmingham.

"I'm surprised to see them in the position they are in with the quality they have," said coach and first assistant Chris.

"They have caused us problems before and that shows the quality of this league.

"They have also had some decent periods in the season but they haven’t managed to get the points to get away from the relegation zone."

Chris eluded to West Brom causing us problems and they did exactly that back in December when two goals from Kanu consigned us to a 2-0 defeat at the Hawthorns. In four games last season, we drew both Premiership matches and an FA Cup tie before winning the replay at the Lane.

"Yes, we’ve certainly had our difficulties against them,†added Chris. "The defeat in December was probably the most disappointing of the season in terms of the goals we gave away on the night.

"That performance and result certainly gave us a kick at the time – we went on to have a couple of very good displays afterwards."
