Ryan Mason provided the finish to a 17-pass move in the 82nd minute to secure our first victory in the Premier League this season at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
The midfielder burst onto Erik Lamela’s final pass and got to the ball just before the advancing Costel Pantilimon, taking a blow to the knee in the process. He was eventually stretchered off but Mauricio is hopeful the problem isn’t too serious. Ryan will be assessed on Monday.
The goal was no less than we deserved as we grew stronger as the minutes ticked away on Wearside with substitutes Erik and Andros Townsend both impacting the game positively.
“I’m very pleased with the effort of our players, I thought they were fantastic,” said Mauricio.
“The first half was an open game, full of energy from both sides and difficult to play but we fixed some problems and dominated the second half. We fully deserved the victory.
“We scored a fantastic goal, a collective goal. This is the way we want to play.”
As for Ryan, Mauricio added: “It was a great goal and he was unlucky. We hope it’s not a big problem. It’s a knock on his knee and we’ll assess it tomorrow.”
